The refurbishment of the buildings located on Mateo Inurria Street is part of a strategic area, currently under consolidation, as the new university epicenter of the city. The Comillas Pontifical University, which is now moving into the buildings to boost its graduate programs, has also relied on AXIS to meet its specific needs, making the buildings a point of reference for students, teachers and visitors, thanks to their proximity to other university spaces in the Chamartín area and their excellent connectivity.
The project, developed by Axis Arquitectura, has had the preservation of its architectural value as a guiding thread, thanks to a careful intervention that respects its essence. The combination of open spaces of great height in the common areas, with functional closed spaces that favor fluidity and natural light in the interiors, has been maintained. In addition, some existing noble cladding materials such as natural stone and granite have been preserved, and have been allowed to dialogue with more modern and durable materials, providing a neutral aesthetic, but of great elegance.
The new layout has been designed to meet the needs of the new tenant, both spatially and in terms of thermal, lighting and acoustic comfort. In addition, new outdoor living spaces have been created on the first floor and on the roof, with a careful choice of finishes that enhance the user experience.
The intervention reflects the need for contemporary functionality without losing its historic character, integrating current uses that allow for flexible use: collaborative work areas, study areas and meeting spaces that adapt to university life. Overall, the intervention not only enhances the original architectural beauty, but also positions the building as a landmark for the academic community and the city.
